Chinese Houses

Chinese Houses are a flower native to California.  It prospers in shaded areas and can be found there when grown in the wild.  This flower enjoys cooler weather and prefers partial shade with dry, well-drained soil.  Its name is derived from the blooms on the flowers, which stack in towers of inflorescences that resemble the roofs of the Chinese Pagodas.  This flower can be fall planted in zones 7-10 and makes an excellent border plant.  Chinese Houses will not tolerate parching heat and prefers evening temperatures that drop below 65° F.
