Flax – Scarlet

Scarlet Flax (Linum grandiflorum) is an annual flowering plant native to the Mediterranean region, particularly the areas between North Africa and Southern Europe. While it is closely related to the common flax (Linum usitatissimum) used in linen production, Scarlet Flax is primarily grown for its ornamental beauty rather than for fiber or seed.

This striking wildflower is known for its vivid red, five-petaled blooms and fine, airy foliage. It performs best in full sunlight and thrives in loose, well-draining soil. Scarlet Flax is exceptionally drought-tolerant and can withstand high temperatures, making it an excellent choice for hot, dry climates and low-maintenance gardens.

Due to its long taproot, Scarlet Flax does not transplant well. For best results, sow the seeds directly into the ground. In the United States, planting can be done in early spring after the last frost, or in the fall in regions with mild winters, which allows the plant to establish early and bloom sooner the following season.

Scarlet Flax typically blooms from late spring through summer. It also attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to wildflower gardens, naturalized areas, or pollinator-friendly landscapes.
