Sunflower – Velvet Queen

Velvet Queen Sunflowers have a stunning deep red color that fades outward from its black center to the tips that are splashed with a tinge of orange.  Velvet Queen Sunflowers grow up to 7 feet tall and offer blooms that are 10 inches in diameter.  They are drought tolerant and require a lot of sun.  Velvet Queen Sunflowers provide a substantial amount of food for birds, so they will flock to them.  Sunflowers also make good cut flowers.  Planting should be done in the spring after the danger of frost is past. ‘Autumn Beauty‘ and ‘Lemon Queen‘ are other tall varieties of sunflower.  There is also a short variety of sunflower know as ‘Sunspot‘, which only stands between 2 and 3 feet in stature.

The broadcast rate for seeding is 6 – 7.5 pounds per acre.

The seed drill rate for seeding in rows is 3 pounds per acre.
